Centre for Audiovisual Media (AVMZ)

The University of Cologne is one of the oldest universities of Germany and also its largest. The Department of Education is situated in the Faculty of Philosophy. Whilst the department’s teaching and research activities cover a wide range of pedagogical topics, there is a group of researchers who have been dedicating their work to the development and study of eLearning environments: Hermann Rüppell as full professor, Karl Steffens as senior researcher and Bettina Pfleging and Gertrud Kemper as researchers.

The eLearning group has in the last couple of years developed a variety of educational multimedia programs which have been presented at national and international fairs, among these a program to learn the kanji signs (KREAKANJI) that was awarded several prizes, a program to help students acquire knowledge in the field of educational psychology (ALICE) and a program to improve the competence in English of German police officers (POLICE). Presently, its members are engaged in European projects in the field of language training for control room personnel (MUTLICOM112) and in developing a digital library (PROMETEUS).

The university also hosts a centre for audio-visual media that has initiated and supervised a large number of video productions (see http://www.uni-koeln.de/hp-fak/avmz/index.htm). The centre´s facilities and support turned out to be a valuable asset to the project, as well as its director Rolf Pausch.
